The Karoo Project
For a few years Jonny Blundell, from Rootspring Music, and I had been dreaming about doing something like The Karoo Project. We'd worked on numerous field recordings together in and around Cape Town, and we thought we could create something even more beautiful and interesting if we went further into the wild with a dedicated team and more time. Jonny suggested the Karoo as a location and I was totally onboard. What this initial idea and subsequent process led to, was something so lovely, that it became almost addictive. We can't wait to do more!
The days were very long, exhausting and stressful at times, working around wind, rain and blazing midday sun. We managed to find some beautiful gaps in the weather to film & record The One Who Sings (Zolani Mahola), Jitsvinger (Quintin Goliath), Native Young (Yannick Wilde & Mohau Moahloli) and Mark Fransman.
I found the collaboration between the classically-trained musicians and the mix of other genres really inspiring and interesting. We'd love to continue to experiment with and build onto this concept in the future.
The weeks of meticulous planning, huge energy output, teamwork, and many hours of post production paid off, and we now have four films that we're really proud of. The intersection between music and nature, and the communicative power of audio and visuals are magical, and we really hope the films inspire people.
